To Parma

We were up fairly early to have breakfast and pack . We were booked on a 10:26 train to Parma via Bologna, but of course wanted to make sure we were there in time. We took the water bus from Rialto - a very pleasant trip.

Farewell to beautiful Venice!

The first leg of our trip was on the lovely Frecciarossa, the red train, going at up to 250 km per hour. As we were seated in business class, we were treated to a snack box and a drink. We arrived in Bologna for our connecting train, which was a single class train with no assigned seating. We just sat somewhere that we could keep an eye on our luggage.

Frecciarossa - the fast train!

We walked to near our apartment, but we weren’t due to check in until 3 and needed to get some lunch. So we found a small cafe and each had pasta. We checked into our apartment - quite nice with a mezzanine area and old frescoes on the upper parts of the walls.

Inside our apartment

I went out to get some groceries.  The supermarket is about 8 minutes walk away, but is lovely! The ground floor has masses of cheese, meats, wines etc, while an escalator down takes you to a full sized supermarket. The parmesan stack is awesome!

Chianti Classico for EUR7!

Cheese, glorious cheese

We had a relax for a while in the apartment. It is quite chilly and there was light rain from about 5pm. Thankfully we were only had to go across the road for dinner!

Just after 7 we walked across the road to Ristorante Algiol d’Or - we only chose it because of its proximity.  But they told us they were fully booked, but then said we could have a table as long as we were out by about 9. No problem!

We had a very nice meal. We had a meat sampler, with lots of lovely local prosciutto and salami, Parmigiano Reggiano with apple jam and fried puffs - delicious! We both chose pork cheeks for our main, but our waiter misunderstood and brought out a single pork cheek with polenta and leek for us to share. It was very nice and probably enough! Ian had an espresso and I had a little dessert of rice pudding brûlée.
