A quiet day in Avignon

Neither of us slept well - I was full of the virus and Ian found the bed to be uncomfortable. But we definitely appreciate the very quiet area that we are in. It is a markedly different place to Paris and Nice. Almost like Naples but with less people and lighter coloured stone buildings.

We went out to walk up to the Palais des Papes, but didn’t want to do a tour inside. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and was the home of the Popes in the 14th century. We got there just as a tourist tram was getting ready to go, so we decided to go on that, to see what we had missed in our walking around. It is such a small area, central Avignon, that we probably had seen a lot of it already. The tram was very informative - the driver was very skilled as he negotiated some very narrow streets!

We bought a baguette on the way back to our apartment. We had so much food left from last night’s feast that we decided to repeat it for lunch. Just can’t beat that French bread!

We had a very quiet afternoon, snoozing and resting.  We were determined to go out for dinner, but didn’t go far. We went to the restaurant at the bottom of our building, Le Bistrot des Sales Gosses. We had a lovely dinner - Ian had a delicious pork dish, while I had a red pesto penne pasta (really still on comfort food) - washed down with a delicious bottle of the famous local wine, Chateauneuf du Pape. We also had dessert - creme brûlée for Ian and panna cotta with berries for me.

We had a relatively early night after a really lovely meal!
