Palermo, Sicily - day 1

I got up at about 7 and went for a quick walk on the jogging track. We had breakfast of eggs and bacon brought to our suite. We arrived into Palermo at about 9 am and went straight out to meet our tour bus for a 9:15 departure.

Sunrise coming into Palermo

We had a drive around Palermo and then headed up one of the hills to Monreale. We had a bit of a climb up to the town, where we visited the beautiful cathedral. It is a UNESCO world heritage site, primarily as it combines Arab and Norman architecture and styling. In particular the whole cathedral is decorated with mosaics!

The cloister

We had some spare time after that and had a cuppa and small cannoli with another passenger, Barbara from Chicago, in the main square. We then walked back down the hill and boarded the bus for the trip back to the ship. On the way we stopped to admire the huge opera house.

Back on board the ship, we had a sushi lunch in Kaiseki. I managed to win a game of bingo, but none of the trivia team turned up, so it was just the two of us. We did pretty well considering, and came about 4th.

We had a late dinner at Atlantide - Ian had lobster thermidor, while I had dusk assiete, veal chop and carrot cake! We spent the dinner chatting to a couple from Colorado at the table next to us. They were Richard and Judy and it was a great conversation.

We went to see Giovanni Parmintieri performing a number of opera songs, he was very good again!
